Russia May seaborne coal exports retreat 1.19% MoM, Kpler

Russia's seaborne coal exports totaled 16.23 million tonnes in May 2023, falling 1.19% from the preceding month but gaining 0.85% on the year, according to Kpler's cargo-tracking data.



Shipments to Asia fell 18.48% from the preceding month but still rose 0.12% year on year to 11.41 million tonnes in April, representing 70% of the country's total exports.


Exports to China's mainland came in at 6.60 million tonnes, down 5.14% from the month-ago high but surging 32.39% from a year ago, taking 41% of Russia's total coal exports.



Exports to South Korea stood at 2.05 million tonnes, up 17.14% month on month and 6.14% on the year.


India-bound shipments slumped 62.07% from a month ago to 1.21 million tonnes, which were also 23.05% lower compared with the year-ago level, data showed.



Russia exported 2.14 million tonnes of seaborne coal to Europe, climbing 10.96% from the preceding month yet still 48.13% lower compared with the year-ago level. The shipments represented 13.20% of the total.



Russian coal exports to transcontinental Turkey stood at 1.70 million tonnes, up 4.15% from the preceding month and 26.85% from a year ago,


Over January-April, Russia's total seaborne coal exports were 71.79 million tonnes, up 5.70% year on year, and that to China jumped 65.51% to 27.85 million tonnes, a share of 38.79%.
