India's power generators witnessed a marginal decline in sequential thermal coal imports in April, yet the volume was still up by nearly 9% year on year, according to official data.
India's power producers imported 4.79 million tonnes of thermal coal in April, climbing 8.82% from 4.40 million tonnes in the same month last year but sliding 0.15% from 4.79 million tonnes in March, data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Among all imported all by power companies last month, 2.36 million tonnes were directly burned, up 5.74% year on year and 14.33% month on month, and 2.43 million tonnes were blended with domestic coal, rising 11.99% year on year but falling 11.09% from a month ago.
In April, the proportion of coal imported by Indian power companies for mix accounted for 50.7% of the total, down from 57% in March.
Among power companies blending imported coal with the domestic cargoes, 7 state-owned power enterprises imported 1.87 million tonnes and 8 private enterprises imported 560,500 tonnes; among those directing burning imported coal for power generation, one state-owned enterprise imported 8,100 tonnes and 13 private power enterprises imported 2.35 million tonnes.
In April, NTPC imported most thermal coal, at 1.16 million tonnes, followed by Adani's Mundra, at 749,700 tonnes.
In this fiscal (April 2022-March 2023), Indian power companies imported 55.63 million tonnes of thermal coal, a 106% jump from a year ago. About 20.53 million tonnes were directly burned in this period, and 35.1 million tonnes were blended with domestic supplies.
