The No.6 unit of Shidongkou power plant of China Huaneng Group has been put into operation after successfully passing 168 hours of continuous full-load trial operation on May 25, marking it the first demonstration project with equal-capacity replacement, China Electric Power News reported.
The entire project comprises two new 650-MW coal-fired power units (#5 and #6) with higher efficiency, which replaced equal capacity from four outdated 325-MW coal-fired units (#1-4) in the same site of Shidongkou factory.
The #5 unit has been built and put into operation in December last year.
According to the trial run, coal consumption of the #6 unit declined by about 20% compared with the old one, equivalent to a reduction of 220g CO2 for generating 1 KWh of electricity.
As a major project for energy security in Shanghai, it aims to provide more reliable, cleaner and more flexible power supply to meet peak summer demand in the city.
